Welcome to Industrial Relations
This is the blog for the on-line distance section of Professor Doorey’s Industrial Relations course (HRM3422). On this blog you will find all the information you need for the course, including: the outline, links to the weekly lectures, lecture notes, handouts, supplemental readings, and course announcements.
Access to much of this website requires a password, which enrolled students will receive by email to their yorku email account towards the end of August or early September. The first lecture will be posted on or before Monday September 12. Subsequent lectures will be posted each Monday afternoon thereafter as it this was a regular course scheduled for Mondays. The lectures are presented in video format–lectures from the classroom section of this course were recorded and will be played back to you. It is your responsibility to watch the lectures and do the readings.
Trouble viewing the Lecture: If the video doesn’t play when you hit the link, then you may need to download some free software. You can download it by following this link. There is a download for Mac or a PC, so make sure you select the right one. Once you have installed that software, the video should play in the VLC format once you click on it.
Midterm: There will be a midterm at York on Monday, October 24th, from 7 to 9 p.m. If you cannot make that time, you should drop the course. There will not be alternate scheduling to work around students’ individual schedules. If you are taking the course from another city and you cannot come to York, you will need to make arrangements through the Distance Office to write the exam at an institution near your home.
The Blogs and Apple App
I make use of blogs in this course. There are two you need to know about. This one is the dedicated course blog for your class. The other blog you need to know about is my main blog, Doorey’s Workplace Law Blog. I update this several times a week at least with entries drawing from current events, many of which relate directly to the course materials. You should bookmark this blog and check back regularly. We will often discuss the blog entries in class. Reading them will help you better grasp the material and the central issues that permeate through employment law. The main blog also includes a direct link to this dedicated HRM3422 course blog.
For those of you with an Apple product (ipod, iphone, ipad), my main blog is also available as a free App from the Apple Store. Go the App store and search “doorey”, and then you can download me and carry me where ever you go. How nice.
See you in September.

Professor,
On the online lecture videos, you mentioned something about a course kit. If I’m not mistaken, is there no kit for this section? Would the supplemental readings available here on your blog be considered the course “kit” for this class?
Thanks.
Tania, the kit is the Supplemental Readings in your on-line section. There is no hard copy kit for this class.
