Project Details

The Wills Project is a longstanding PBSC project run in partnership between the PBSC chapters of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. The Wills Project’s goal is to provide legal services related to estate planning for low-income individuals, and to provide students with the opportunity to offer client services in the estate planning field. This project is run in partnership with Fogler Rubinoff LLP and various lawyers in Toronto.

PBSC Students are paired with lawyers specializing in Wills & Estates law to draft wills, powers of attorney for property and personal care, and reporting letters for low-income individuals.

Is A Work Plan Required For This Position?

No.

If yes, the student(s) must reach out to the lawyer supervisor, draft a work plan, and submit it by email to the Program Coordinator and the lawyer supervisor by November 1st at the latest. Please note that workplans are required for all legal research and writing projects.

What Type Of Training Will the Organization Provide?

Note: All first year PBSC volunteers and all volunteers working on research projects must also attend a PBSC/Thomson Reuters legal research strategies workshop.

The student is expected to complete a training session about Wills drafting at the start of their placement.

How Many Hours Per Week Will the Student Volunteer(s) Be Expected to Volunteer?

3-5 hours per week.

Will The Student(s) Be Expected To Show Up For Regular Shifts Each Week?

The schedule will be flexible as the bulk of the work that students will be doing will require their own editing, drafting and revising, in consultation with the supervising lawyer.

The only scheduled dates for the length of the project will occur when the student, client and lawyer meet for the ID verification, and when they meet at the end of the process to testate and witness the will.

Requirements and Expectations

Only upper-year students are eligible to apply.

Students are required to have completed or be concurrently enrolled in a Wills & Estates class.
