Organization's Mandate: Juritrans is a community organization with roots primarily in Montréal, with activities all across Canada, to advocate for trans people's civil rights. The organization provides both a community resource for LGBTQ+ folk and a trans ID clinic.

Project Name: Report on municipal and school-board level attacks on 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada

Project Type: Public Legal Education (presentations, workshops, podcasts, brochures, blogs, etc.)

Project Delivery: Virtual

Description of Project: The student volunteers will help document municipal and school-board-level attacks on 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada by researching legislation, bylaws and policy documents. Some examples of these cases include the Carolyn Burjoski and Josh Alexander school board cases in Ontario, or Pride flag bans in Westlock, AB and Barrhead, AB. This documentation will then be made into a report, to be published and made accessible to the community through centralized databases such as Egale and other local advocacy organizations.

Role of Student Volunteers: In this role, the student volunteers will create a final report documenting the municipal and school-board level attacks on 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada by researching legislation, bylaws and policy documents. The students will also create visual components to accompany the report, such as brochures and infographics. The volunteers will begin by researching attacks in the GTA, before branching out to the rest of Ontario and then other provinces.   

Role of Supervising Lawyer(s): The supervising lawyer will oversee the project, answer questions and provide legal resources as needed. The supervising lawyer will review and approve the final project deliverables before it is used by the organization.

Main Project Deliverable: Creating produced content (e.g. research memos, brochures, podcasts, etc.)

Number of Student Placements: 2 students.

Hours per week the student volunteer(s) will be expected to work: 3-4 hours per week

Regular shifts or a flexible schedule: The students will work with a flexible schedule.

Is there a workspace provided for the student at the Organization: No.

Devices and technologies the students will be required to have: Word processing software, Internet, computer, any videoconferencing software

Is there an expectation for the student(s) to be bilingual: No, but French is an asset.

Law School Pre-Requisites: N/A.

Other Requirements or Expectations: Queer or trans students particularly welcomed, or those with experience working in 2SLGBTQ+ spaces.
