About Smith Immigration Law

​​We are a boutique immigration and refugee law firm that specializes in LGBTQ+ immigration to Canada. We frequently appear before the Immigration and Refugee Board and Federal Court to advocate on a range of immigration matters, including family sponsorship, refugee applications, inadmissibility issues, and temporary visas.​ 

Project Details

​​Students will be involved in preparing refugee applications for members of the LGBTQ+ community, including gathering information from clients, drafting refugee narratives, and doing legal research and writing related to country conditions. Students will be given the opportunity to attend refugee hearings, legal information seminars and do legal blogging.​ 

Role of Student Volunteer(s)

​​The student will be assisting with the preparation of refugee applications for members of the LGBTQ+ community through research and legal writing. ​ 

Is A Work Plan Required For This Position?

No. 

If yes, the student(s) must reach out to the lawyer supervisor, draft a work plan, and submit it by email to the Program Coordinator and the lawyer supervisor by November 1st at the latest. Please note that workplans are required for all legal research and writing projects.

What Type Of Training Will the Organization Provide?

Note: All first year PBSC volunteers and all volunteers working on research projects must also attend a PBSC/Thomson Reuters legal research strategies workshop.

​​Initial orientation on how to complete a refugee application.​ 

How Many Hours Per Week Will the Student Volunteer(s) Be Expected to Volunteer?

3-5 hours per week.

Will The Student(s) Be Expected To Show Up For Regular Shifts Each Week?

Schedule is flexible.

Is Workspace Provided For the Student Volunteer(s)?

​​​Yes, if volunteering in person a workspace will be provided.

​​Preference given to students who completed immigration and refugee law.​
