The final examination in this course will be held on April 12 from 9 am to noon in TEL 0001. A brief chronology of events in Ontario political history has been added at the end of the course outline. Some of you may find it useful for your essays, especially if you elect to write about a policy area, to consult a collection edited by Daniel Drache in the early years of the Rae government. It is entitled Getting on Track: Social Democratic Strategies for Ontario and was published by McGill-Queen's Press (Montreal and Kingston) in 1992. It was undertaken with the assistance of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and reflects some of the optimism of the Left following the Rae victory. Whether or not you accept the arguments made by the authors, you should find the analysis of the issues useful. Please note that my chapter in the book Passion for Identity edited by Eli Mandel and David Taras is only in the 1987 edition. It does not appear in later editions of the book. For your essays, you may find it useful to provide examples from contemporary Ontario politics. For a guide to recent news events in Ontario, you may want to consult Canadian News Facts, available in the Reference section of the Scott Library. It provides a brief paragraph on significant news stories and gives you a date you can use to look for details of the story in the newspapers available on microfilm, also in Scott. Unfortunately Canadian News Facts ceased publication at the end of 2001. For the period up to 2000, remember that the Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs (also available in Reference) may be of assistance. The Ontario section for 2001 has now been posted at this web site. The section for 2002 wil be added shortly. Canadian Annual Review. |
