Student Life Stream:

Looking Ahead to Graduate and Professional School
Wednesday October 21st, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
ACE 007

Perhaps you're nearing the end of your degree and are starting to think about what comes next. For many students, the idea of earning an advanced degree, either through graduate school or professional school, is not only alluring, but realistic. If you’re considering graduate school or professional school, then this session is for you. This interactive session will provide essential information on what steps you can take – even before your final year – to prepare a successful application to graduate and professional programs and associated scholarships.

Research & Writing Stream:

Writing 3: Outlining, critical thinking and writing a (first) draft
Monday October 19th, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
TEL 0009

What do you do with all that information once you’ve found it? This session will focus on evaluating what you find in the course of your research, making choices about what to say and in what order to say it and creating an outline and first draft.

Writing 4: Revision strategies, citations and academic integrity
Monday October 26th, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
TEL 0009

Your first draft shouldn't be your last! In this session, we’ll discuss the importance of revision, using formative feedback to guide the development of your essay, paraphrasing and quoting, and the purpose and importance of citations. A short review of the academic integrity tools online will also be included.

Writing 5: Putting the process together and using feedback constructively
Monday November 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
TEL 0009

How do I put this all together? This session will briefly review the phases of writing an essay discussed in preceding sessions and help you come to terms with the reality that good writing is the result of a recursive and sometimes messy process. This session will also discuss how to interpret the feedback you receive from your grader and use that feedback constructively to improve future writing.
