When one begins a web browsing session there are variety of ways one might start. If one is searching for a specific topic or item, one would probably begin with a search engine. Choice of search engine is usually a choice of habit but, whichever is chosen, a search will yield a number of results. From these results, one decides to follow one of the links and continues. For each browsing session the choices follow one path from a practically infinite number of possible paths.
The choices one makes, while interacting with Puppet Motel, construct a unique experience for each session. It is impossible to have two identical sessions. Even if one were to consciously try to follow an identical set of actions, it would be impossible to interact with objects that are dragged continuously in the same way. Another factor that produces a unique experience is the way images and sounds are presented when moving from room to room. Both an image and a sound are chosen randomly by the work as one moves between rooms hence one never knows what combination will be presented.
Variability in Puppet Motel produces a unique experience for every session. The range of possibilities is limited in its scope as the elements available are fixed. Manovich refers to this type of interactivity as closed interactivity. Open interactivity occurs when the elements in a work are not fixed but are generated on the fly.
