The MHRM alumni association presented a complimentary HR workshop on Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00 am to 12:00pm. Current MHRM students and alumni were invited to attend.  Two guest speakers provided perspectives from both the academic and practitioner worlds.

1.    Dr. Jelena Zikic  presented a collage of her research which focuses on career management issues, combining individual and organizational perspective. 

Brief biography – Dr. Jelena Zikic:

Dr. Jelena Zikic received her PhD from Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at University of Toronto and previous to that she studied at the London School of Economics where she earned her MSc in Social and Organizational Psychology. Her study focuses on career management issues, combining the individual as well as organizational perspective. In particular, Dr.Zikic developed her research program and expertise in career transitions, stress and coping and career development theory. She has also developed part of her career internationally and is currently involved in several cross-cultural projects. At present, Dr. Zikic is working on three major projects and all three are founded by SSHRC. Her main focus is on studying career transitions of immigrant professionals, and examining both personal as well as structural barriers to their career success as well as their coping strategies in the new labour market. In her teaching she promotes critical thinking and reflection and focuses on teaching Career Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, and Organizational Communication. Her international background and experience allow her to relate to diverse and increasingly globally-minded students at York University.

Laura Desjardins shared her perspective on career development with a focus on organizational support for the individual.

Brief biography – Laura Desjardins:

Laura Desjardins is the Human Resources leader for Canada. Laura has almost 20 years of experience leading human resources teams implementing programs and solutions to enable business goals and grow organizational skills and capabilities. Laura joined HP Canada after global assignments focused on acquisition integration and talent management. She was the Vice President of Global Learning & Development Operations & Delivery where her team was responsible for the delivery of sales, technical and leadership solutions as well as the implementation of an integrated learning, talent and performance system. She has also led efforts that implemented HR business process outsourcing to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of learning services.Laura joined HP with the acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp. Prior to Compaq she was responsible for improved people management decisions with the implementation of a combined HR & payroll system at a major communications company. She also led the implementation of a competency based staffing, rewards and training process to drive increased quality of hires and elevated performance. Laura began her career with a major telecommunications company where she found her HR calling in rebuilding on-campus recruiting initiatives. She led the staffing of inbound and outbound call centres with high volume hiring campaigns pioneering the use of virtual interviewing. She held a variety of leadership roles responsible for staffing and career transition.

Degrees: Laura holds a Master’s of Science degree in Telecommunications and Network Management from Syracuse University. She has completed executive education programs at the London Business School and the University of Southern California. She has been an instructor of Telecommunications and Human Resources at Ryerson University.
