What kind of a feminist is Adam?

The first question one has to ask when facing such a possibility is: "Is Adam a feminist?" She is not only a feminist but also a specific kind of feminist, an Epistemological Feminist. In her essay Embodying Knowledge: A Feminist Critique of Artificial Intelligence Adam opens up her discussion by affirming that feminist epistemology is the theoretical approach that is most adequate for the criticism of AI. In Adam’s (1995) opinion, "feminist epistemology is brought [into her analysis of AI] … to offer a critique which [she argues] is both more radical than, and qualitatively different from traditional philosophical critiques of AI" (Adam, 1995, p. 355).

What is Feminist Epistemology?

Feminist Epistemology is the branch of epistemology that challenges the traditional view of knowledge production. Feminist epistemology raises three issues that are of utmost importance in the feminist critic of AI. First, the role of the body in the production of knowledge; second, the distinction between propositional (knowledge represented in the form of logical propositions or rules) and skill-based knowledge; and finally the definition of subjectivity in the production of distinct knowledge.
