Reading analysis
(2 short papers)

(3 pages maximum). They are due at the start of class on the day we are to
discuss the readings. Please make sure that the formatting and style of the
papers conforms to specified course
guidelines, and include a bibliography.
Question 1: In what ways was the
sociolinguistic situation in Montreal in the 1960s and 70s comparable to a diglossic
situation (as described by Ferguson and Haeri), and in what ways was it different?
Question 2: In the papers by Budach et
al, Barrett and Haviland, what are the major differences betweeen the ways
that languages are viewed within communities (e.g. French Ontarians,
Latinos in the US) and by outsiders? Consider in particular the notion of
indexicality.
Question 3: What evidence is there for
linguistic boundaries in codeswitching (i.e. for a clear separation of the
languages in the minds of speakers)? Consider also the readings from
October 30 and November 6.
Question 4: According to this week’s
