Professor, University or College

Description

A professor is the leader of a higher education system that comes with an
underlying amount of responsibilities. Educators must respect and abide by
these responsibilities to uphold their title as an active University Professor
within Post Secondary Education. Professors have the responsibility for
preparing lecture materials, assessing students, while also educating a variety of
courses to both undergraduate and graduate students within a certain field of
study.

In depth: A professor is the leader of higher education but what is not public to the eye
are the underlining responsibilities they must respect and abide by to uphold
their title as an active Professor. The position is broken into three major
responsibilities (Taeaching 40%, Research 40%, Service 20%) and you have to
fulfill those requirements. The role of a professor is to teach but also to conduct
their own research projects. You must both teach and contribute to the
educational realm and provide your own formulated resources to the
study/studies you major in…for example if your background is in psychology
studies you are required to conduct research projects and contribute to that
realms inventory of research material by producing your own scholarly works
based in that field of studies. The road to becoming a professor in general takes
8-12 years (4years undergraduate, 2years of masters, 4years Phd)

College Professor

Our chosen career was that of a college professor. The formal and technical name for one is “professor”. The role of these college professors can be described as teaching their students the core curriculum. These professors also must be problem solvers, lesson planners and a confidant. When looking at a college professor teaching, they have the ability to create their own curriculums and are able to choose exactly what they would like to teach. However, a challenging aspect of this is that they must keep up with relevant information in relation to the times we live in. In addition, when looking at a college professors’ typical week it’s very hard to find any consistency on a week to week basis. This is because their days and weeks can consist of many different things going on. In saying that what some weeks can consist of include marking over hundreds of tests or assignments, meeting with students and having meetings with colleagues. When we are looking at the training or qualification needed for these professors, they do in fact need either a masters or PHD and you must have a vocational specialty. Also, in addition college professors teach more to train and prepare their students for a specific entry level career. Finally, when we look at this profession we can see that there isn’t a specific journey or way to becoming a college professor. This was seen through the interviews as all 3 had very different journeys and paths to getting into this profession.
