Awards and Other Support Funds

Many graduate students at York are successful in winning prestigious external or internal scholarships and you are encouraged to seek eligible opportunities. The university also offers bursaries and other support funds to assist with your scholarly and research activities. Common types of funds include the following: 

Bursaries that are allocated based on demonstrated financial need;

Research support funds to cover expenses related to scholarly and research activities;

This award, named in honour of Professor Hélène Massam, is given annually to an outstanding full-time PhD student in Statistics with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics prior to the final approval of their thesis. Hélène Massam was an accomplished statistician. She joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1984 after obtaining a PhD at McGill. In 2008, she was named a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics "for contributions to Wishart distributions and to graphical models". Professor Hélène Massam worked at York for 35 years. She was deeply appreciated and respected by students as an outstanding mentor and teacher who devoted herself to helping her students achieve her high expectations.

Students are nominated by their supervisors and the best candidate is selected based on demonstrated research excellence.

This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in a PhD program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Eligible applicants must demonstrate academic excellence (minimum A average) and financial need. Applicants should submit a one-page statement outlining the impact the award will have on their studies at York and in their future careers and must complete the Student Financial Profile. Preference will be granted to female students.

This is a bursary given to a 4th year or graduate-level student in statistics, who is judged to be academically deserving.
