York University Autism Mentorship Program

Program Objectives

  • To provide a supportive environment for York University autistic students
  • To help students meet their goals through one-to-one mentorship
  • To build a social network or peer group within the university community for students on the autistic students

Who Are We?

Mentors are graduate-level university students, most of whom have a psychology background. The program is directed by Dr. Jessica Schroeder Westcott, clinical psychologist and director of the York University Psychology Clinic. Mentors work with autistic students in individual meetings and group events to achieve their personal goals.

The role of a mentor is akin to that of a "coach." A coach does not play the game for you, but helps you practice skills, helps prepare for the game, and cheers you along. They also work with you after the game to talk about what went well and how to practice for the next game.

Individual Meetings

Autistic Students are paired with a mentor who is there to provide support based on student goals.

Goals discussed in the meetings can include: organizational skills, managing course work, building social connections, job-related goals, stress management, etc.

Meetings occur on campus or over Zoom.

Group Events

Group events provide the opportunity to make social connections. Workshops are also provided based on student interest.

Group events occur on campus or over Zoom.
