Peel Regional Police / Forensic Identification Services - Technician Identification, Peel Regional Policy
Graduate Program in Public Policy, Administration & Law, Master of Public Policy, Administration and Law (MPPAL) 2021

I am an Identification Technician with the Peel Regional Police Forensic Identification Services, also known as a Forensic Identification Specialist. Using specialized techniques, I collect fingerprints, palm prints, identification markers (scars/tattoos) and take photographs of criminally charged individuals. I then submit them to the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), which is used to identify suspects or link individuals to previous police criminal interaction, immigration and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) databases for the purpose of identification. I collect DNA samples of convicted offenders and submit these samples to the National DNA Databank (NDDB), which are then compared against evidence received from crime scenes, my duties are governed under the Identification of Criminals Act.

Working for a Police Service in a civilian capacity, I work very closely with the Ministry of the Attorney General office within our justice system. I am privy to many cases in the criminal, provincial and federal levels. Having access to all sides of the justice system (prosecution/defence/victim services), I value the qualities of fairness, impartiality and a strong commitment to justice. Upon completing my MPPAL degree, this deepened my knowledge, refined my skills and equipped me to pursue a career as a Justice of the Peace for the Province of Ontario. My MPPAL degree provided me with a comprehensive understanding of our legal frameworks, governance and policymaking processes. The courses within the MPPAL program honed my critical and analytical skills, which are crucial for making informed decisions, which gave me the confidence in pursuing my career as a Justice of the Peace. Overall, the MPPAL program provides a multidisciplinary understanding in public policy, administration, and law to develop solutions to societal issues in order to pursue a career in related fields.
