Serving as the President of SWAGS impacted me significantly by allowing me to grow as a leader in defending people's rights for equality and safety. As student president, I advocated for several issues including better student entry scholorships/tuitition rates, I pioneered the Go Safe Ride Program- where people could get safe rides on campus at night in response to the increase in campus sexual assaults and violence. I pioneered the first transgender washroom in the social work school building by advocating for funding from the University. I provided newspapers and televisions in the social work building so that students could be made aware of any criminal activity or fires occurring on the main campus. I gained the confidence and passion for justice, which I continues to demonstrate in various hospitals by taking on different roles such as Professional Practice Leader, hospital policy reviewer, patient advocator, and employer abuse whistle blower. Being student president allowed me to enjoy event planning which helped me creatively and progressively choose social work event speakers that rendered optimal education experiences and entertainment ratings amongst staff and community.
