Nic DesRoches is a strategic communications and brand leader who specializes in turning complex ideas, research, and data into stories that connect with audiences. He is currently Director of Brand & Communications at Xello, an education technology company helping K–12 students build their postsecondary paths and future plans. In his role, Nic leads brand and communications strategy, shaping how Xello tells its story to educators, families, students, partners, and the broader education community.

Before joining Xello, Nic was Manager of Strategic Communications at ApplyBoard, leading thought leadership and content strategy including data storytelling, strategic reports, and long-form market analysis. He also previously served as Data Communications Manager at US-based nonprofit GivingTuesday, translating philanthropic research and data for audiences around the world. A longtime former volunteer with Scouts Canada, Nic has also led communications and national leadership initiatives supporting thousands of volunteer and youth members.

Nic holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing and Creative Writing from York University and a Master of Arts in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University. After university, Nic began his career in technical writing, working across communications, marketing, government funding, research, and R&D reporting.

He remains passionate about the power of good writing and thoughtful storytelling, whether that's at a TTRPG table, around a campfire, or in a sector report.

My experience at York University gave me the foundation for the career I’ve built in writing and communications. Studying both Creative and Professional Writing taught me not just how to write well, but how to understand an audience, make complex ideas accessible, and deliver storytelling with purpose. Those skills have followed me throughout my career, from technical and research communications to brand, thought leadership, and executive communications. My time at York gave me the confidence to pursue a career where curiosity, creativity, and clear communication can have a meaningful impact.
