Shayla wears the crown of being a mother 1st before all the academic accolades and titles. When she is not mothering and co- parenting with her partner, she holds space for racial healing and centres various mental wellness stories and well being of people with marginalized identities such as people of African descent who are racialized as Black, Indigenous Peoples, other racialized folks and gender diverse people. She is also a board approved supervisor who provides equitable clinical supervision to other social workers and students. She also enjoys providing psychological workshops on varied mental health and anti- racism topics. As an interprovincially registered social worker, she is a sought after Black History Month speaker who is often booked a year earlier. All her services are inclusive, anti- oppressive, culturally responsive, decolonial and identity affirming with the ultimate goal of collective liberation and community wholeness. Shayla ‘s work is centred on de- pathologizing, de- stigmatizing and de- colonizing mental wellness services

Before getting my degree, I had a menial job working at a factory, but two weeks after my MSW graduation I have been employed as a social worker and I have never struggled with employment after that. From child protection, to clinical social work, to clinical supervision and consultancy to building a thriving practice. The social work profession is so Multifaceted and versatile. The critical lenses and approach that I have to my work were planted and watered at York. I am so proud to be a two times York alumna and if I could, I would do my PHD because I am believe being a York alumna makes me a distinguished person.
