CAIS takes a holistic approach to AI that unites a broad range of research expertise in computing, engineering, science, health, business, law, public policy, art, media and design. The ORU is composed of two units that work closely together on a range of AI research projects. The Intelligent Systems Unit, led by Professor James Elder, unites machine learning, data mining and computer vision researchers with domain experts in healthcare and smart cities to tackle important real-world problems of critical importance to society. The Public Policy unit, led by Professor Pina D’Agostino, addresses the balance of potential risks and benefits of various forms of AI technologies, and how this balance can best be managed through practice, policy, and governance for AI intellectual property, data ownership, privacy, bias, trust, accountability and explainability.
