POSITION TITLE: Leadership & Equity Activator

UNIT & DEPARTMENT: Student Community & Leadership Development

ELIGIBILITY: Full-time Domestic and Full-time International students. Must be work/study eligible and must complete the online Student Financial Profile.

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 2 Summer, continuing into Fall/Winter as Lead position

RATE OF PAY: $20

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Summer + Fall/Winter (May – August, Sept – April 30th)

HOURS OF WORK: Summer term: 34 hours/week. Fall/Winter term = 10 – 15 hours/week.

LOCATION: The position is intended to work on-campus and those interested should only apply if they can be present on the Keele campus during designated work hours.  In the event the university decides to pivot to a remote work environment again, SCLD will determine how to best utilize staff to continue to run operations.

The Work Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in:

• creating meaningful goals and objectives;

 • recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;

• identifying their competencies and skills; and

 • articulating their skills and experiences with confidence. Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Peer Community Builder & Equity Activator (PCBEA) will work directly with the Manager, Education and Communications to bring equity, diversity & inclusion (EDI) into action within the university's communities.  PCBEAs will co-facilitate workshops/discussions for students relating to equity, support community development, contribute to curriculum for the Leadership Development team, attend university events, connect with student leaders, provide support in the logistics and set up for some larger events and the opportunity to develop a smaller project independently. This position is ideal for students interested in developing skills in facilitation, community development, project management and event planning. 

  • During the summer, work with the Manager, Education and Communications to inventory, plan for, and develop programs, trainings, offerings and leadership workshops for the upcoming year.
  • Assist the Manager in implementing plans with the full team during F/W.
  • Assists in developing professional/personal development for team, as well as for PLT Professional Development Series to support community and peer to peer learning.
  • Acts as a positive role model by demonstrating leadership, and working collaboratively with other SCLD/relevant areas to brainstorm/plan community engagement events.
  • Researching, developing & presenting workshops on various leadership topics to their peers
  • Assist with innovative ways to use various social/digital media platforms to market the events and program to current York students and staff to reach a broader audience.
  • Assist Manager with writing & implementing leadership curriculum.
  • Liaise with current students and student leaders at York on matters pertaining to leadership development, including custom programming & training requests and individual questions or concerns.
  • Compile and input program-related data and statistics for analysis.
  • Assist with planning, creating and executing all of the below leadership events and programs including, but not limited to:
    • Creating and delivering leadership and equity based workshops
    • Leadership trainings: college presidents, peer mentors etc.
    • Peer Leader Training
    • Peer Leader Training: Professional Development Series (ongoing)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

Applicants must be current York undergraduate students. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven track record of demonstrated leadership, as well as a genuine interest in and comprehensive knowledge of various equity and leadership topics, social justice, and the ways in which we can reflect current world events in programming; an intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are strongly recommended. Incumbent must also have strong research & presentation skills.

  • Demonstrates effectiveness in program development, and coordination.
  • Knowledge and experience engaging with a combination of the following: equity, diversity & inclusion, indigeneity, human rights, anti-oppression, social-justice, power & privilege.
  • Event and activity planning experience.
  • Sound judgement.
  • Must be highly organized, energetic & able to make a positive contribution to all tasks related to the smooth functioning of Student Leadership programming at York.
  • Demonstrated skills in event planning and management.
  • Excellent communication skills: written, oral & the ability & willingness to speak in front of large groups.
  • Demonstrated excellence in prioritizing tasks with superior attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly with competing deadlines.
  • Superior customer service and interpersonal skills, while presenting a professional image of themselves, the program and the University at all times.
  • Well versed in social media networking and community building strategies and tactics.
  • Relevant multimedia content curation with creativity and “out of the box” thinking.
  • Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets)
  • Demonstrates reliability, punctuality and eagerness towards new experiences and learning.
  • Ability to accurately complete tasks diligently and on time.
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with students, volunteers and staff.
  • Students who are a good fit for this position are approachable, knowledgeable and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of Emotional Intelligence combined with excellent adaptability and organizational skills.

  • Peer Leader Training (May 1,2,3)
  • Ongoing monthly Peer Leader Training: Professional Development
  • Summer training: Last week of August
  • Ongoing Training advised as far in advance as possible

    • Your goal, with this assignment, is to educate the audience on an equity-based leadership topic. Create & submit a 5 – 8 minute PowerPoint presentation on one of the topics below. Please submit as PDF, or PPT/PPTX or Google Slides (enable sharing options). You will present this workshop if successful for an interview.
  • Choose one of the following topic to focus on:

    • A Leadership Topic of Your Choice
  • You will be evaluated by the following criteria:
    • Is the information effectively, critically and accurately researched from valid sources?
    • Do you have 2-3 appropriately written learning outcomes? (Hint: google & use Bloom’s Taxonomy as a guide when creating learning outcomes).
    • Is the information presented in a student friendly manner? Is it engaging? Is it concise?
  • If successful as an applicant, you will be delivering workshops to students on various leadership topics throughout the year -- I want to see if you can be engaging professional, and informative. We also want to see if you reflect yourself & your skill set in your workshop. Be creative.
