I've always been interested in going to the health field. I've always had the motivation to help people. The Global Health Program is the first program of its kind. It's exciting to me because I'm able to learn things that nobody has ever been taught before.
As part of the Global Health Program I was able to explore Costa Rica. For the first month and a half I was located in Heredia where I work with the regional toxicology institute. On our first assignment we were given the opportunity to go see a local community who's been recently devastated by floods and we were testing well water to know if pesticides were leaking from other farms. One of the most exciting things while I was in Costa Rica was actually taking the knowledge I learned in the classroom and applying them into the field.
In a typical classroom setting you don't actually get to see the real world for what it is. By doing an international program you're able to explore the theory as well as the actual practice and how it affects people. It felt great being part of the first team to actually go in and make a difference.
My name is Andre Moura and I'm a recent Global Health graduate at York University.
