York comes clean!

Participants in the Clean Air Commute were encouraged to bicycle to work


We can all breathe a bit easier. The Clean Air Commute Week, held June 23-27, was a huge success.


During the event, York University in conjunction with other members of the Black Creek Regional Transportation Management Association and Pollution Probe, reduced air pollutants by 5,449 kg.


And, across the Greater Toronto Area this year 6,101 people participated from 164 companies and reduced smog by a total of 267,866.67 kg.

The Clean Air Commute Week events included a contest, where participants had to take public transit, rollerblade, carpool, bike or walk – do anything but travel by car alone.


York University prize winners:



  • Bike - Valerie Baddon, who took the bus 77.8 km daily
  • Movie tickets - Nicole Toivonen, who took public transit 38 km daily
  • MEC gift certificate - Tara Dow, who used active transportation (biked or walked) 15 km daily
  • GO Transit gift bag – Rachelle Anne P. Mendoza, who used active transportation (biked or walked) 5 km daily, did 7 km of teleconferencing on June 23 and 25 km of teleconferencing on June 24-26, and carpooled daily.

The grand prize draw for GTA participants, including companies, was held at an award and appreciation night on July 9 at the Mill St. Brewery in the new Distillery District.
