He joined York University in its formative years, bringing with him a background in law as an alum of Osgoode Hall Law School, as well as expertise in history and economics. He was among the early faculty members who helped establish York’s academic foundations and administrative structures. He also served as master of Winters College.

During his time at the University, Rickerd was known for his intellectual rigour, collegial spirit and commitment to public service. His career extended beyond York’s campuses, including leadership roles with the William H. Donner Foundation and the Donner Canadian Foundation, where he supported research and civic initiatives across Canada.

His work on the McDonald Commission, which examined Royal Canadian Mounted Police activities related to Quebec separatism and national security, reflected his deep engagement with Canadian public affairs. Rickerd’s insights into law, governance and international relations were widely respected and often sought out by peers and students alike.

Rickerd is survived by his wife Julie and son Christopher.
