Hear from York Employees

Hear directly from York employees about why York is home!

Annette Boodram, Diversity & Inclusion Consultant

A graduate of York University, Annette returned as an employee because York University offered her the flexibility and the environment she had been looking for. “I really liked what the role had to offer,” says Annette. “The diverse community makes York a truly unique place to be, something I really wanted to be part of again.” She also saw an opportunity to be part of progress and change. “This is an exciting time for York,” she says. There’s no better time to make York your home. Dividing her time between conducting workshops and outreach, and ensuring equity is represented on campus,  Annette brings humor and passion with her to work each day.  To her, York is home.

Desta Abebe, Campus Services & Business Operations

A member of the York community for over 20 years, to Desta, it’s the best place to work. “If someone was thinking of York, I would tell them this place is the best. They care about you here – they help you learn and advance.” Desta was new to Canada, and joined his cousin who also worked here. “York has been so good to me – the benefits are endless, they’ve provided my family with education, and me with lots of opportunity to learn new skills.” An infectious and active community member, Desta treats everyone like family.  He never wants to retire and brings that passion and commitment to York each day. To Desta, York is home.

Steve Dranitsaris, Senior Executive Officer (retired)

When asked why he committed 40 plus years to York University, Steve Dranitsaris, Senior Executive Officer for the Vice-President Finance and Administration responded: “I love my job and I enjoy coming to work so much. People are surprised to hear about York’s immenseness and the complexity of the place, which may sound like a negative, but is what provides for the challenges and opportunities that enrich the work experience.” A graduate of York University, Steve has found consistently that York offers endless challenges and opportunities for growth. A highlight? “Where else could I have participated in convocations for the Prime Ministers of Israel, France and Italy? I was able to seek out people of influence from all over the GTA to partake in those events, and am proud to have been involved.” York University offers simply the best people to work with – with a career that spans over 40 years, Steve has worked with many of them.  “I’ve been presented with other opportunities,” Steve says, “but where else will I find great people, and all this opportunity? Why would I want to be anywhere else? York is home.”
