Title: AI Governance in Practice: Why Attention to Impact Matters
Abstract: This talk examines the rapid growth of AI use in government, particularly in Canada, and the concerns that come with it, including lack of transparency, accountability, and potential harm. It highlights the need to better understand the real-world impacts of these systems on public services. Through case studies, the talk explores how AI is being used and emphasizes the importance of stronger oversight and meaningful public engagement in AI governance.
Bio: Joanna Redden is an Associate Professor at Western University and co-director of the Starling Centre and the Data Justice Lab. Her work focuses on the social and political impacts of government AI, with an emphasis on data justice, public accountability, and civic participation.
