Courses Offered in the First year of studY

 

Acting / Directing with emphasis on teaching:

THEA 5010 3.0 / 5011 3.0: Graduate One Voice. Introductory voice training for the stage which includes: a daily warm up, the art and sensation of breathing, physicality, physiology, psychology, and speech sounds (including the International Phonetic Alphabet) and the application of all to performance.

THEA 5012 3.0: Graduate One Text. Introduction to the speaking of Shakespeare text, the art of rhetoric and the application of the art of rhetoric to other forms of spoken literature.

THEA 5020 3.0 / 5021 3.0: Graduate One Acting. The course moves from acting without text and structure to the full complement of texts and technical requirements. An actor’s personal approach to the work is encouraged and guided towards the standards of the profession.

THEA 5030 3.0 / 5031 3.0: Graduate One Movement. The focus of movement for actors is to develop and deepen the physical expression of the actor, thus enabling him/her to make the compelling, spontaneous, and informed choices necessary to good theatre. The breath is the unifying factor in this work, informing all aspects of exploration.

THEA 5040 3.0 / 5041 3.0: Graduate One Directing. This is the primary course in stage directing. It handles textual issues, working with actors, working with designers and the exploring of personal style.
Corequisite: THEA 5020 3.0/5021 3.0: Graduate One Acting

THEA 5042 6.0: Graduate One Directing Practicum. The main focus of this first year course is the direction of an Origins project, a Shakespeare project and other productions as assigned.
Corequisite: THEA 5040 3.0/5041 3.0: Graduate One Directing or permission of the instructor.

THEA 5060 3.0 / 5061 3.0: Graduate One Movement Teacher Seminar. This course is the first level of preparation for the Movement Teacher Diploma candidates for teaching.

THEA 5070 3.0 / 5071 3.0: Graduate One Voice Teacher Seminar. This course is the first level of preparation for Voice Teacher Diploma candidates for teaching.

THEA 5072 3.0: Voice Teacher Research Project. This course serves a dual purpose. For the M.F.A. (concurrent) Graduate Diploma in Voice Teaching students, this course gives a proper academic structure to the established practice of their summer assignments: attendance at a voice intensive or conference, observing master teachers, research projects. For Graduate Diploma in Voice Teaching (stand-alone) candidates, this course is the umbrella course for their final term which includes supervised teaching and coaching projects and rehearsals in voice, speech and dialects, research in teaching and the major research project.

THEA 5080 3.0 / 5081 3.0: Graduate One Acting Teacher Seminar. This course is the first level of preparation for the Acting Teacher Diploma candidates for teaching.

THEA 5210 3.0: Graduate Research Seminar. An examination of the major theories of theatre and their evolution in the last half of the twentieth century.

THEA 5900 3.0: Imaging the Arts: Interdisciplinary Collaborations. This course explores practical and theoretical aspects of cross-disciplinary collaborations in the arts. With a view to reflecting on issues of representation, analysis of pre-existing collaborations supplement critical reflections on newly created works. Participants in the course augment their already acquired skills with new techniques/skills related to other art forms. Studio creative experiences, supplemented by work with analog and digital technologies, culminate in a personal or group project supported by a paper. Team-taught, the focus of the course shifts from year to year.

Design for Performing Arts:

THEA 5210 6.0 Graduate Research Seminar. An examination of the major theories of theatre and their evolution in the last half of the twentieth century.

 

THEA 5410 6.0 History of Visual Sources.  Offers a survey course relating the architecture, art, clothing, interior design, and furnishings of Western civilization to the theatre.  The course will also touch on the visual aspects of the theatrical styles of various periods.

 

THEA 5413 3.0 Graduate One Design for Performing Arts. This course provides graduate students with the opportunity to work on complex design projects in the area of stage, lighting and/or costume design. Students will expand their knowledge and working methods in a traditional theatre, dance and opera. Study in sustainability of the space and production methods is part of the research and final design project.

THEA 5412 6.0 Graduate One Directing and Design. An opportunity for directing students and design students to develop skills in the evolution of ideas towards the producing and designing of theatre pieces.

 

100 Play Exam.

Summer Research Project. A Summer Research Project is a required component for each of the existing fields in the MFA program in Theatre. This requirement will extend to the proposed Ecological Design for Performing Arts field. The proposal for the Summer Research Project has to be submitted to the Graduate Program Director and design instructor. Students are required to research and develop ecological practices for design in theatre whether sets, costumes or sound and lighting. Design students are challenged to respect the creative and innovative processes as an important component in all stages of the design regardless of the medium. A research paper will be the end result and can be the basis of the sustainable technology of their thesis project.

 

Playwriting:

THEA 5090 3.0 / 5091 3.0: Graduate One Playwrights’ Workshops. This course provides students with specialization in playwriting and new play development, with individual consultation on a weekly basis. The consultation focuses on the student’s work in progress, and offers examination, critique and exploration of style, form and content of each student’s ongoing creative process.

Acting / Directing with emphasis on teaching:

THEA 6010 3.0: Graduate Two Voice. Advanced work in all areas of study undertaken in the first year with the addition of dialects and an increased focus on solving individual voice and performance problems.
Prerequisite: THEA 5010 3.0/5011 3.0: Graduate One Voice or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6012 3.0: Graduate Two Text. The speaking of other periods and styles of dramatic literature: Greek tragedy, Jacobean, Restoration, eighteenth-century comedy, nineteenth-century melodrama, Oscar Wilde and G.B. Shaw.
Prerequisite: THEA 5012 3.0: Graduate One Text or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6020 3.0: Graduate Two Acting. Built upon the basis of THEA 5020 3.0/5021 3.0: Graduate One Acting, this course expands the actor’s range and begins the work on acting for the camera, auditioning and rehearsal technique.
Prerequisite: THEA 5020 3.0/5021 3.0: Graduate One Acting or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6030 3.0: Graduate Two Movement. The Graduate Two Movement programme has been designed to increase the actor’s vocabulary of movement and awareness of the physical body as a communicating instrument.
Prerequisite: THEA 5030 3.0/5031 3.0: Graduate One Movement or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6040 6.0: Graduate Two Directing. The main focus in this second year is the thesis production.
Prerequisite: THEA 5040 3.0/5041 3.0: Graduate One Directing or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6060 3.0 / 6061 3.0: Graduate Two Movement Teacher Seminar. This course is the second level of preparation for the Movement Teacher Diploma candidates for teaching.
Prerequisite: THEA 5060 3.0/5061 3.0: Graduate One Movement Teacher Seminar.

THEA 6070 3.0 / 6071 3.0: Graduate Two Voice Teacher Seminar. This course is the second level of preparation for Voice Teacher diploma candidates.
Prerequisite: THEA 5070 3.0/5071 3.0: Graduate One Voice Teacher Seminar or permission of the instructor.

THEA 6075 3.0 Graduate Two Practicum. Intended for the final-year students of Acting or Directing in the MFA in Theatre program working on mounted department productions in the Winter term. This course offers students an opportunity to intensively develop and perfect advanced skills in the creation of a theatrical performance.
Prerequisites: THEA 6010 3.0 Graduate Two Voice, 6020 3.0 Graduate Two Acting and 6030 3.0 Graduate Two Movement

THEA 6080 3.0 / 6081 3.0 Graduate Two Acting Teacher Seminar. This course is the second level of preparation for the Acting Teacher Diploma candidates for teaching.
Prerequisite: THEA 5080 3.0/5081 3.0 Graduate One Acting Teacher Seminar or permission of the instructor.

 

Design for Performing Arts:

THEA 6413 3.0 Graduate One Design for Performing Arts. Students will research, design and present a project that will cross the boundaries between theatre, fine art, film, architecture, and other medium. This course will emphasize the importance of visual arts in a modern society. As part of the contemporary approach to performing design, students will incorporate sustainability of alternative spaces and elements of production.

 

Two half courses or equivalent chosen from those offered by the Graduate Program in Theatre.

Two half courses or equivalent from an approved cognate field at the graduate level. These courses should include Environmental Studies courses and Faculty of Fine Arts courses that would be useful in the development of the final thesis project.

Thesis Project and Oral Defence. The thesis may consist of a theoretical design, a realized production  or research design project in sustainability.

 

  • The Theoretical Design Thesis incorporates two of the following areas Set, Costume or Lighting. The thesis is composed of four distinct parts: a  proposal, research paper,  documented design and oral defence.   Documented design should include: design drawings, technical drawings, and additional materials requested by the supervising professor.

 

  • The Practical Design Thesis is composed of five distinct parts: a thesis proposal, research paper, documented design,  realized production and oral defence. Documented design should include design drawings, technical drawings, photos from production and additional materials requested by the supervising professor. 

 

  • The Research Design Project in Sustainability is composed of four distinct parts: a thesis proposal, research paper, documented design  and oral defence.  The documented design should include design,  technical drawings and additional materials requested by the supervising professor.
