Graduate Diploma in Voice Teaching
Only applicants with significant prior teaching and acting experience will be considered for a Graduate Diploma program in Teaching Voice for Theatre.
The diploma is offered in two forms: concurrent and stand-alone:
Teaching Voice for Theatre - Concurrent Diploma
Qualified students who have been admitted to the two-year MFA program in Acting may apply to concurrently pursue advanced studies in the teaching of voice for the actor. The diploma program trains voice specialists to be effective teachers, with a solid practical grounding in the functions of an acting / movement / voice ensemble. Students graduate with an MFA in Theatre and a Diploma in Teaching Voice for Theatre.
In addition to the complete Acting curriculum, the course of study for students enrolled in the concurrent Diploma in Teaching Voice for Theatre includes:
- weekly voice teachins seminars in voice, speech, dialect and pedagogy
- supervised teaching including regular observation and feedback
- voice teaching and coaching assignments with productions on and off campus
- assistant teaching at the National Voice Intensive
- a major voice training research paper
The voice training program includes voice science, anatomy and physiology, language, speech sounds, phonetics, dialect/accents, coaching techniques, and traditional and non-traditional approaches to voice.
Teaching Voice for Theatre - Stand-alone Diploma
The stand-alone diploma is a one-year, part-time (c. 18 hours per week) program of study for professional voice teachers who wish to continue to develop their skills. Applicants must have an MFA in theatre or an MFA or MA in a related peformance/vocal field, plus extensive teaching experience. The program includes the curriculum of the concurrent voice diploma as well as more advanced supervised teaching opportunities and coaching.
