Centre for Human Rights

Who are we?

We are impartial advisors, educators, investigators, mediators and problem-solvers. Our mandate is to resolve concerns and complaints about allegations of discrimination and/or harassment as defined by the Ontario Human Rights Code and York’s human rights policies.

What do we do?

We are here to listen to your concerns, issues and complaints. Then we’ll assist you to explore options and solutions to human rights concerns.

We provide the following services:

  • Information and Referral
  • Early Complaint Resolution
  • Investigation
  • Education Services (Information Sessions, Presentations, Workshops, Training)
  • Resource Library with books and documents on human rights, social justice, equity, legislation and policy

Our Role

The Centre for Human Rights assists individuals and groups to address and resolve allegations of discrimination and harassment as defined by the Ontario Human Rights Code (Code). Our mandate covers all grounds of the Code, as well as York's human rights policies and provisions. Where a complaint cannot be resolved informally, the matter may be investigated. Most of the labour will be conducted at an informal level, seeking resolution early and effectively for the individual(s) involved.

The Centre advocates for the adherence to both the spirit and provisions of the Code, as well as all human rights policies at York.

The Centre will play a significant role in human rights education promoting a culture of equity and mutual respect. As part of its educational role, the Centre will continue to liaise with human rights groups/committees/associations both within the University and in the broader community as resources permit.
