Support for Issues in the Practicum

Issues in the Practicum
It is the objective of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Education Program to facilitate the success of every Teacher Candidate. If a Teacher Candidate or Mentor Teacher has concerns, they should attempt to resolve the issue collaboratively. The next step is to involve the Practicum Facilitator. If the issue is not resolved, the Teacher Candidate or Practicum Facilitator is advised to consult the Academic Coordinator(s) to mediate outstanding issues. In some cases, a Teacher Candidate will be removed from a placement after all efforts to come to a resolution have been exhausted.

If a Teacher Candidate demonstrates a consistent pattern of poor participation, the Practicum Facilitator will meet with the Teacher Candidate to implement an action plan to allow the Teacher Candidate the opportunity to complete the practicum program successfully. If the goals and timelines established in the action plan are not met, the Teacher Candidate is deemed to be at risk of failing the program.

Daily interaction and ongoing communication between the Teacher Candidate and the Mentor Teacher is necessary to discuss the day’s lessons, observations, suggestions, future planning and other topics and/or concerns. It is important that the Teacher Candidate accepts any feedback received in a professional manner and adjusts the Practicum performance accordingly. Mentor Teachers are encouraged to contact the Practicum Facilitator if there are concerns regarding acceptance of feedback.
