Preparation Time/Planning Periods
Teacher Candidates do not receive planning/preparation time. When the Mentor Teacher has a scheduled planning period, the Teacher Candidate is to use this opportunity to remain with the student(s) and observe/assist in the learning process. At the Mentor Teacher’s request, a planning/preparation period may be used to confer with the Teacher Candidate.
Field Trips and Excursions
Teacher Candidates may participate in field trips that are organized by the Mentor Teacher and are required to follow the official policies that govern such excursions. Teacher Candidates continue to be supervised by their Mentor Teacher during school trips. Teacher Candidates who do not participate in the organized field trip will make arrangements with the Mentor Teacher to make-up the missed day. The Practicum Facilitator is to be notified of the date agreed upon for all make-up dates.
A York University field trip waiver must be completed by the Teacher Candidate and submitted to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Office. This form is available in the TLSE 3715 6.00 course in eClass.
Professional Development Days
If a Professional Development Day occurs during a Practicum, the Mentor Teacher may involve the Teacher Candidate in the program. If for some reason it is not appropriate for the Teacher Candidate to be involved, then an alternate experience can be organized. A Professional Development Day is considered as a regular teaching day for the purpose of attendance. Teacher Candidates who do not participate in Professional Development Days or alternate programming are required to make-up the day.
