Supervision and Supply Teaching

It is understood that Mentor Teachers will retain responsibility for the Teacher Candidates at all times. Teacher Candidates will not take on the role of teaching staff.

In the case when the Mentor Teacher is absent, it is understood that the school will assign a supply teacher.

When the Mentor Teacher steps out of the class for a short period of time, the Mentor Teacher retains responsibility for the class.

Teacher Candidates are expected to accompany Mentor Teachers during supervisory duties. Any supervisory duties, including yard, hall, lunch duties or supervision of school trips, must be carried out in the company of the Mentor Teacher. If TCs are invited to attend Professional Development, they can make a request to the Practicum Facilitator. Once the field trip or PD is approved, the TC must fill out a Field Trip Form. A York University field trip waiver must be completed by the student and submitted to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Office. This form is also available and should be submitted in eClass.

Issues or concerns regarding responsibility in the Practicum should be discussed with the Practicum Facilitator. A clear understanding of roles, careful planning and conscientious record-keeping protects all educational partners.
