The Teacher Candidate is expected to be present and available to assume prescribed duties throughout the entire Practicum schedule.
The Teacher Candidates’ responsibilities include:
- Have a recent Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
- Completed and submitted proof of successful completion of Provincial Health and Safety Training and if required any school board specific training (e.g., COVID)
- Completed and submitted the Health and Safety Checklist in consultation with the Mentor Teacher on the designated days prior to the placement
- created a practicum binder to contain schedules, lessons, short range plan (4-day plan) and long-range plan for discussion, an overview of IEP goals, lesson feedback forms and daily reflections
- Created an introduction letter for you and your students
- Complete and share with MT self-assessments/reflections at the end of each week
- Develop a professional and collegial relationship with the Mentor Teacher as a professional partner
- Establish a clear communication plan with the Mentor Teacher
- Participate in a range of teaching and administrative tasks that are directed by the Mentor Teacher
- Prepare a day plan/summary for each day of the practicum
- Shadow the Mentor Teacher during school duties and meetings
- Share lesson plans with Mentor Teacher in advance of teaching time in order to be able to revise effectively to meet student needs and interests
- Show initiative and participating in daily activities, such as taking attendance, amplification troubleshooting, and arrival and dismissal routines
- Record feedback provided by Mentor Teacher on the MT Feedback Form and have your Mentor Teacher sign it
If any of these responsibilities are not met, the Mentor Teacher is encouraged to contact the Practicum Facilitator as soon as possible.
