How do I install and configure the Pulse Secure VPN client on my computer?

Scripted Method

The Operations Team has created scripts and instructions at the links below for you to download and install Pulse Secure on your computer. To try the scripted method, go to https://surt.glendon.yorku.ca/yuvpn/ and follow the instructions as they pertain to your device.

Manual Method

To install Pulse Secure on a Windows Machine

  1. Click on the Start button and type in Microsoft Store.
  2. Launch the store, and search for Pulse Secure (use the magnifying glass at the top right of the Store to search for it). 
  3. Click on Get to install the application.

 

To configure Pulse Secure

  1. To configure Pulse Secure, run the application (Start button, type in Pulse Secure).
  2. Click on VPN settings, then Add a VPN connection:
  3. Select Pulse Secure for VPN provider:
  4. Under Connection name, enter MyVPNYORK SSLVPN
  5. Under Server name, please copy and paste this link: https://vpngateway.yorku.ca/vpnyork
  6. You will need to log in using your Passport York credentials - do not check "remember my sign in credentials". To get to the checkbox:
    1. From the VPN control panel, Click on Advanced options
    2. Under Connection properties, select edit                   
    3. Finally, uncheck "Remember my sign-in info:               

To connect to VPN (Pulse Secure) on your Windows Machine

  1. To connect to the VPN (Pulse Secure), click on the Start button and start typing VPN. Run the app by clicking on VPN settings icon.
  2. Find the YorkU VPN icon (or alternate name entered) and click Connect.
  3. The first time you Connect you will get a Windows Security that will ask you for your Network Credentials. It will look something like this:
  4. Use your Passport York credentials
    1. Username: We have found that depending on your device, you might need to use one of the following methods to enter your username. Let's say there is a user named Richard Glendon and his username is "richglen" (without quotations). This is how he would try the 3 methods:
      • Passport York username only: richglen
      • YORKUpassportyork: YORKUrichglen
      • passportyork@yorku.yorku.ca: richglen@yorku.yorku.ca
    2. Password: use your Passport York password
  5. You will receive a 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) prompt that you will need to approve to complete your connection. For more information about 2FA please see Information Security's Duo Two-Factor Authentication website.

To install Pulse Secure on a Mac

To connect to VPN (Pulse Secure) on your Mac:

  1. Once Pulse Secure is installed, click on the Pulse Secure icon in the top menu
  2. Scroll down to VPNYork (or alternate assigned name)
  3. Click Connect
  4. Enter your credentials
  5. You will receive a 2FA (2 Factor Authentication) prompt that you will need to approve to complete your connection. For more information about 2FA please see Information Security's Duo Two-Factor Authentication website.
  6. This icon indicates a successful connection
