Le programme

Le programme d’espagnol et de cultures et sociétés latino-américaines de Glendon offre des possibilités d’apprentissage théorique, expérientiel et appliqué qui vous préparent à devenir des leaders de demain. Grâce à des programmes d’études et à des curriculums spécialement conçus pour une société contemporaine, nos diplômés jettent les bases d’un examen et d’une production culturels espagnols axés sur l’avenir pour le XXIe siècle.

Des cours interdisciplinaires soigneusement choisis en langue, littérature, culture et linguistique espagnoles et latino-américaines aident les membres de la communauté étudiante à développer un ensemble complet de compétences qui leur permettront de réussir dès le premier jour. Alors qu’ils approfondissent leur maîtrise de l’espagnol écrit et parlé, les principaux courants de la littérature espagnole et latino-américaine, et même les dissections avancées de la culture et des civilisations espagnoles, les étudiants bénéficient également du développement de compétences non techniques en matière d’écriture, de pensée critique et de collaboration, ainsi que de la double orientation linguistique anglaise et française de Glendon, ce qui rend nos programmes exceptionnellement trilingues.

Tant à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur du campus, nos programmes offrent aux étudiants des possibilités d’expérience qui leur permettent de mettre à l’épreuve les connaissances et les compétences approfondies qu’ils ont acquises dans le cadre de projets concrets. Les partenariats avec des organisations et des établissements du monde entier partageant les mêmes idées—comme l’éco-campus de l’Université York au Costa Rica ou des établissements d’enseignement supérieur au Mexique, en Colombie, en Espagne, aux Philippines, au Panama et au Brésil—élargissent les perspectives étudiantes et améliorent leurs résultats d’apprentissage grâce à une expérience pratique. Par une multitude d’activités et d’expériences culturelles proposées tout au long de l’année universitaire—notamment des conférences, des projections de films, des colloques et des collaborations directes avec des locuteurs natifs espagnols—les étudiants peuvent s’immerger totalement dans l’étude de la langue et de la culture espagnoles.

Les cours

Le programme vous propose une approche rigoureuse et équilibrée des études hispaniques. Vous commencerez par des cours qui vous aideront à développer vos connaissances de la langue, des littératures et des cultures espagnoles, et à acquérir un cadre de base pour la lecture et l’écriture critiques. Vous passerez ensuite à des sujets plus spécialisés comme la littérature, la linguistique, la culture et la civilisation hispano-américaines.

Tous les cours sont donnés en espagnol, à l’exception des cours de langues, qui sont principalement en espagnol, mais qui ont l’anglais ou le français comme langue de référence.

GL/SP 3711 3.00 Film in Latin America and Spain

This course studies important paradigms and approaches to literature such as post-structuralism, hermeneutics, post-colonialism, gender, and bio-criticism. Literature is studied both as a cultural touchstone and as textual artifact. Throughout the course a variety of Spanish fictional and poetic works are analyzed in light of the theories studied.

This course is designed to study selected plays from Spain and/or Latin America in the context of aesthetic movements and socio-political events. Connections will be made between reading/performance and drama/theatre theory and its practice. In the second semester students will apply skills learned in the first semester by mounting a theatrical production. As part of the Las Nubes Summer Abroad Program in Costa Rica, this course centers on the nature and function of narratives as they relate to the construction of subjects, communities and nations. Students conduct narrative field work in Costa Rica. The course will be taught in English, but students majoring in Spanish will have to complete their assignments in Spanish to receive major credits.

GL/SP 4701 3.00 Hispanic Community Narratives in the GTA

This project-based course collects and explores community narratives of Hispanic and Latinx people in the GTA. Switching between in-class preparation/analysis sessions and community field work, it focuses on how participants construct themselves narratively and negotiate differences across languages and cultures. This course is an introduction to Spanish and Latin American graphic novels produced in recent years. We approach the texts from a diversity of theoretical perspectives reflecting on contemporary issues such as gender, sexuality, class, violence, race, "high" and "low" culture. GL/SP 4706 6.00 Hispanic Geopoetics: A Field Trip to Geography, Identity, Literature and Art

This project-based course introduces students to geocriticism. It explores the relationship between art, literature and geography in the Hispanic world and pursues its investigation through a fieldtrip to a place related to each year-specific project (i.e., Gaudi's Barcelona, Rulfo's countryside). GL/SP 4713 3.00 Portraying (Dis)Ability in Spain & Latin America

This course examines the portrayal of disability in the Spanish-speaking world, including mass and social media representations, television, film, literature, and visual arts. It contrasts cultural mediations that invalidate, undermine, or infantilize disabled communities with those that empower the disabled. Prerequisite: GL/SP 2002 3.00 or permission of the department.

This capstone, practice-based, experiential course offers students an opportunity to apply their knowledge to real contexts through community placement opportunities.
