African Studies Program

The African Studies (AFST) program provides students with the opportunity to pursue their interests in Africa and its diasporas. The program brings together members of the York community with an interest in Africa/African Diasporas to re-imagine Africa and its diasporas in terms of their evolution and the advancement of humanity, centrality to world history, and as sites of knowledge production.

York alumna makes history as Ghana’s first female vice-president

Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as Ghana’s first female vice-president on Jan. 7 2025, it marked the latest barrier shattered by the York University alumna. Her inauguration is another milestone in her journey from distinguished academic to national leader.

Partnerships brings Rwandan students to Canada

The York Emergency Mitigation, Engagement, Response & Governance Institute (Y-EMERGE) has established a partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Rwanda that will bring AIMS PhD students to York to pursue their research in mathematical modelling as a tool for addressing climate change.
