Creatively redefine the boundaries of environmental research. Adopting an interdisciplinary lens for your PhD in Environmental Studies, you will create a unique Program Plan, to be guided by your supervisory committee. Using various conceptual approaches to explore environmental issues in their historical and comparative contexts, you will analyze how theoretical and practical matters intersect, and how reflexive, rigorous, critical and creative thinking can inform environmental research, practice and policy. Explore conventional disciplines such as social sciences, humanities, arts and natural sciences in ways that encourage viewing issues through a broader, more contextual perspective, with an emphasis on social justice.

Join an interdisciplinary master’s program that challenges you to look at natural, socio-cultural and built environments differently. In this program, centred on an individual Plan of Study, you will learn how to redefine the boundaries of environmental research to create-positive social and environmental change.

In place of a fixed set of curriculum offerings, the MES approach to learning supports students’ ownership of and responsibility for their education through a Plan of Study. You will develop your own Plan of Study with the support of a faculty advisor, who will provide personalized guidance as you transition through your studies, including internship opportunities. The program also offers the flexibility to complete your MES research work as a thesis, major paper, project or portfolio.

The Graduate Program in Development Studies offers students an intellectually rigorous and relevant interdisciplinary curriculum that is uniquely layered when examining theories and practices of development from a critical social science perspective.

Our research-intensive MA is a uniquely focused, but flexible graduate program. Through the program, students pursue a wide range of research interests as they relate to the field of development studies in both the Global South and North, including gender, education, health, urbanization, sports, forced migration, migrant settlement, global environmental crises, indigeneity, extractive industries, precariousness, etc. The MA is structured as a five-term program combining coursework, fieldwork and internship/placement.

The Master of Biotechnology Management is a graduate program designed to provide students who hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Life Science, or related discipline, and have little/no work experience in Biotechnology, with practical interdisciplinary training in Biotechnology and Management to enhance their competitiveness and employability in the biotechnology management related sectors. Students are awarded two credentials upon completion of the program requirements, a Master of Biotechnology Management and a Graduate Diploma in Management.

The Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology (GDB) is a graduate certification designed for students who hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Life Science, or related discipline, and have little/no work experience in Biotechnology, to enhance their competitiveness and employability in the biotechnology sector. The Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology is designed to provide professional preparation for our graduates to fill current labor needs in the biotechnology sector and strengthen the Canadian economy.

The YorkU MA in Interdisciplinary Studies—one of the first formalized graduate programs in Canada—enables highly motivated students to study within three distinct disciplines in order to deeply explore a particular problem or phenomenon. The Graduate Diploma in Management (GDM) provides students who have non-business background with a robust understanding of the field of management and key skills required in managing an organization. Through a set of modules, students are introduced to the major areas in management – organizational theory, marketing, accounting, finance, operations management, management information systems, organizational behavior, and law – and hone their skills and knowledge in a capstone course that addresses real-life organizational problems. Students interested in public sector management can substitute two business-specific modules with two modules specific to the public sector.

The Graduate Diploma in Management can be taken as a direct-entry diploma for candidates who seek to advance their careers.

The GDM also provides non-business graduates as well as individuals that have degrees from non-Canadian institutions with the pre-requisites required to stream seamlessly into the Master of Science in Management Practice (MScMP) program offered by the School of Administrative Studies or other accredited graduate programs.
