Creatively redefine the boundaries of environmental research. Adopting an interdisciplinary lens for your PhD in Environmental Studies, you will create a unique Program Plan, to be guided by your supervisory committee. Using various conceptual approaches to explore environmental issues in their historical and comparative contexts, you will analyze how theoretical and practical matters intersect, and how reflexive, rigorous, critical and creative thinking can inform environmental research, practice and policy. Explore conventional disciplines such as social sciences, humanities, arts and natural sciences in ways that encourage viewing issues through a broader, more contextual perspective, with an emphasis on social justice.

Are you thinking of pursuing your graduate education in the Master’s in Environmental Studies? We invite you to attend our program session!

Join an interdisciplinary master’s program that challenges you to look at natural, socio-cultural and built environments differently. In this program, centred on an individual Plan of Study, you will learn how to redefine the boundaries of environmental research to create-positive social and environmental change.

In place of a fixed set of curriculum offerings, the MES approach to learning supports students’ ownership of and responsibility for their education through a Plan of Study. You will develop your own Plan of Study with the support of a faculty advisor, who will provide personalized guidance as you transition through your studies, including internship opportunities. The program also offers the flexibility to complete your MES research work as a thesis, major paper, project or portfolio.

The Graduate Program in Development Studies offers students an intellectually rigorous and relevant interdisciplinary curriculum that is uniquely layered when examining theories and practices of development from a critical social science perspective.

Our research-intensive MA is a uniquely focused, but flexible graduate program. Through the program, students pursue a wide range of research interests as they relate to the field of development studies in both the Global South and North, including gender, education, health, urbanization, sports, forced migration, migrant settlement, global environmental crises, indigeneity, extractive industries, precariousness, etc. The MA is structured as a five-term program combining coursework, fieldwork and internship/placement.

The Graduate Program in Gender, Feminist and Women's Studies offers an MA and a PhD to full-time and part-time students. Our Program is fundamentally interdisciplinary in formation and practice. The YorkU MA in Interdisciplinary Studies—one of the first formalized graduate programs in Canada—enables highly motivated students to study within three distinct disciplines in order to deeply explore a particular problem or phenomenon. Established in 1972, the IS Graduate Programme encourages students to pursue original research in ways that do not fit comfortably into methodological and theoretical categories represented by and propagated in conventional MA programs. Interdisciplinarians evaluate multiple theories and methods and utilize the best elements from a variety of disciplines to generate cutting-edge work. IS students interact with a community of scholars who have insight into specialized topics in order to address complex problems and questions that cannot be tackled satisfactorily based on research in one discipline.

The two-year Masters in Public and International Affairs prepares Canada's future leaders for today's global challenges. It has three distinguishing features.  First, it is bilingual, students being required to take one-third of their courses and do their assignments in them in Canada's other official language. Second, it seeks to fuse together theory and practical knowledge. Instructors are both academics and practitioners.  Students learn to write briefing notes and memos to senior government officials.

They do a paid supervised internship with a government department, an international agency, or a non-governmental organization. Those students who wish to pursue an academic career have the opportunity to do a major research paper in their final year. Third, it is multidisciplinary and integrative: students are exposed in their courses to different methodological approaches and skills. The second-year Capstone Seminar is designed to bring together these diverse aptitudes in a dynamic learning environment.

As its name suggests, the MPIA has a strong international component. It encourages second-year students to go on a one-term exchange or to opt for the double Masters degree the MPIA has with the Université de Strasbourg in France. Our programme boasts a very high success rate in placing its graduates in enriching jobs in the federal or provincial civil service, as well as in international organizations or local bodies
