Future Pathways

In an outdoor setting seven YorkU students are wearing YorkU sweatshirts and casual clothing holding jackets and backpacks and walking along a pathway lined with orange, yellow and green trees.

Explore ways to support your graduate students as they prepare for futures whether in academia, industry, or beyond. This section offers resources to help you guide students in identifying and pursuing meaningful post-graduation pathways.

Not all students will end up pursuing an academic career, nor would they necessarily want to. Supervisors should actively encourage students to explore the broad range of career options available to them and encourage them to obtain the skills and knowledge that will optimize their opportunities to enter those careers that the student is interested in.

Graduate Career Preparation and PD

As a supervisor, you have many opportunities to support your students in their professional and career development. Beyond assisting your graduate students with networking opportunities, conference presentations and preparing their research for publication, supervisors can play an important role in helping to shape the future of their graduate students.

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Skills (GPPS) program at YorkU offers tools students need to succeed within and beyond the academic world, informed by reflection and intentional planning through the Faculty’s Individualized Development Plan (IDP). The GPPS program is divided into six broad areas to connect students to opportunities and resources that will help them develop professional plans and goals, and to strategically meet those goals:

  • Career Exploration and Planning
  • Communication
  • Health and Wellness
  • Managing Time and Resources
  • Research Dissemination
  • Teaching

In helping your students prepare for their future, supervisors should encourage graduate students to attend the events and programs offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Career Centre.
