Andres Urrutia Bustos
Senior Geoscientist, Nuclear Waste Management Organization
Graduate Program in Public Policy, Administration & Law, Master of Public Policy, Administration and Law (MPPAL) 2020
I am a geologist specialized in hydrogeology with 20 years of professional experience mostly in the environmental, mining, and nuclear waste industries. In my current role as a Senior Geoscientist at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, I both lead projects and work as a subject matter expert in geoscientific matters.
My work as a geoscientist may me look like a black sheep in the social sciences. Nevertheless, I have always had a penchant for social justice, which I first channelized through volunteering in my younger years and later reinforced with the pursue of my MPPAL degree at York U. Although the work I do at the Nuclear Management Organization may look deceivingly abstract, it is nonetheless strongly committed to the society at large, given the nature of the project being developed: a spent nuclear fuel underground repository for Canada. My pursue of an MPPAL degree at York U. provides me with the social justice mentality needed to create the bridge between my job and the social commitment. I consider an asset the strong emphasis on Constitutional Law that the program provides.
