In the garment factories of Maseru, Lesotho, workers make clothes to be sold in the United States and South Africa. What is day-to-day life like in the factories? Let ex-factory worker Rethabile take you to the places she used to work, meet her friends, and describe her role in the Decent Work Regulation project. This isRethabile's Story, followed by a discussion led by York University Assistant Professor Kelly Pike on the challenges for regulating labour standards in global supply chains.

Kelly Pike is Assistant Professor at York University. She earned her PhD from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. She specializes in the role of worker voice and participation in the regulation of international labour standards, with a particular focus on the global garment industry in Sub-Saharan Africa. In her current research she examines the relationship between multi-stakeholder initiatives and compliance with labour standards, with particular interest in the role of industrial relations - trade unions, worker-management committees, and other forums for activating worker voice. Kelly is currently a major research partner on the project Decent Work Regulation in Africa, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund, in partnership with colleagues in the UK and South Africa. A central aim of the project is to establish a regional network of researchers and policy-makers who have an interest in effect labour regulation. She also works part-time as a consultant for the International Labour Office, having recently completed an evaluation of their program on Workplace Cooperation, piloted in collaboration with Gap Inc.

Nathanael Ojong is Assistant Professor of International Development Studies in the Department of Social Science. He holds an MA in Development Management (London) and Ph.D. in Development Studies (Geneva). He is interested more broadly in questions related to the livelihood dynamics of marginalized groups of people in sub-Saharan Africa. His forthcoming book, 'The Everyday Life of the Poor in Cameroon' (with Routledge), examines how low-income populations use social networks to meet their everyday needs. He has also worked with institutions such as the World Bank and International Labor Organization on issues such as social finance and women entrepreneurship.
