Arctic Routes

Welcome to Arctic Routes

Our ultimate aim is to contribute to a safe future for Indigenous peoples across the circumpolar Arctic by co-developing adaptation measures and technological solutions to decrease the frequency of drownings and accidents in response to hazardous cryospheric conditions for Arctic Indigenous communities to promote enhanced mobility, food security, in addition to physical and mental health.

The first goal of our project is to map and forecast safe cryospheric conditions across the Arctic. Notably, we will develop a dashboard of real-time forecasting for ice and snow safety across inland and coastal communities in northern Canada and Norway, based on an adaptive system created by modelers, traditional knowledge, and community-based observations.

Our second goal is to explore observational and modeling tools to enhance Indigenous capacity in stewarding their land and co-create knowledge mobilization products to promote knowledge exchange across generations and communities by transcending transdisciplinary research and community boundaries across the Arctic. This research will delve into the intricate relationship between changing snow and ice conditions and their impact on food systems, ultimately influencing the overall health and well-being of Arctic Indigenous Peoples.
