Susan Henders studies non-state actors in global politics and Canadian external politics; international human and minority rights; and territorial politics and decentralization in regionalized and multi-national/ethnic states. Geographically, she focuses on eastern Asia, especially Hong Kong, and Canadian-Asian connections.
Among her publications are recent articles on non-state diplomacies in Global Studies, the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, and the Hague Journal of Diplomacy; book chapters on gender and on the quality of territorial autonomy in Hong Kong; and the volumes Human Rights and the Arts: Perspectives on Global Asia (2014; co-editor Lily Cho); Territoriality, Asymmetry, and Autonomy: Catalonia, Corsica, Hong Kong and Tibet (2010); and Democratization and Identity: Regimes and Ethnicity in East and Southeast Asia (2004; 2006; editor).
A former Director of the York Centre for Asian Research, Henders has been a visiting scholar at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the University of Hong Kong. Henders received her DPhil from the University of Oxford and her MPhil at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
