Jennifer Hyndman is Professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University in Toronto, and is Associate Vice-President Research. Her research addresses forced migration in South Asia and East Africa, humanitarian responses to war and displacement, and refugee inclusion in North America. Her interest in this work stems from humanitarian work with CARE in Kenya and UNHCR in Somalia in the 1990s. The geopolitics of refugee camps as sites of governing forced migration in the global South constitute one focus of her work. In Sri Lanka, she has analyzed the violence and displacement generated by militarized competing nationalisms, including the impact of the 2004 tsunami on the war in Sri Lanka (as well as in Aceh, Indonesia). Hyndman’s most recent book is Refugees in Extended Exile: Living on the Edge, with Wenona Giles (Routledge 2017). She is author of Dual Disasters: Humanitarian Aid after the 2004 Tsunami (2011), Managing Displacement: Refugees and the Politics of Humanitarianism (2000), and co-editor with W. Giles of Sites of Violence: Gender and Conflict Zones (2004).
