Madeline Sikes is a Master's Student in the Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Studies at York University. She obtained her Bachelor's of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, with a focused concentration in Classical Voice and Ethnomusicology. Her current research at York University focuses on Shanghai throughout the 1920s to 1940s and the subsequent emergence of Shidaiqu music, a fusion of American Jazz and traditional Chinese folk music, from the region during this time period. She is interested in the exploration of music and memory within China and the Global Chinese Diaspora, and centres her research around the conjunction of past and present performance of Shidaiqu music.
Madeline is a skilled musician and continues to perform as a Classical Soprano. She is a member of multiple choral ensembles and continues her education in classical vocal performance as well as Chinese traditional music.
