Trained at Canada’s National Ballet School I have taught ballet in Japan for over 30 years. My practice combines in-depth study of classical ballet technique with exploration of individual impulses (physical, emotional, and intellectual) to move. Bridging teacher-directed instruction and internal discovery engenders the ability to adopt a recognized system of movement, such as classical ballet technique, while taking personal responsibility for its interpretation. My research interest lies in the questioning and comparison of Japanese and Canadian culture in general and ballet teaching styles in particular. Focusing on Japanese dance students studying overseas I aim to give participants in my research control over their own narrative and look to knowledge gained from dancers exploring their cross-cultural journeys that could have more general implications for study abroad. She will be conducting fieldwork in Japan in Fall 2024.
