Dr. Yukari Takai is a scholar of gender and migration, global Japanese Studies, and North American history with a focus on the issues of gender, women, race, mobility, work, family and borders in the Pacific world. She is finalizing a monograph, supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, on Japanese transmigration across and within the Pacific world. Takai’s recent publication (Gender & History 31:3) was honoured as the best article in Canada in the history of migration, ethnicity, and transnationalism in 2020. She authored Gendered Passages: French-Canadian Migration to Lowell, Massachusetts, 1900–1920 (2008). She has also published numerous journal articles in Histoire sociale/Social History,, Gender & Migration and the Journal of American Ethnic History, among others. She was a Visiting Research Scholar at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Japan (Nichibunken, 2021–2022) and a JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion of Science) Invitational Fellow for Research in Japan (2022–2023). She was born in Tokyo, trained in Montréal and New York City, and is currently based in Kyoto and Toronto.
