Publication Support Fund

The YCAR Publication Support Fund is intended to assist in covering expenses that will enable or enhance the publication of research on Asia or Asian diasporas by YCAR Faculty Associates or Graduate Associates, usually in the form of a book but YCAR has also funded expenses related to journal special issues, video/film projects and exhibitions.

Eligible expenses for traditional publication forms include:

  • indexing
  • artwork
  • copyright clearance
  • cartography
  • image reproduction
  • translation
  • copy-editing
  • funds towards publishing subvention required by a university press

Eligible expenses for film/video projects include:

  • interview transcription
  • subtitling
  • film editing
  • sound design and recording
  • music composition
  • post-production assistance

Eligible expenses for exhibitions and related arts initiatives include:

  • Catalogue support
  • gallery text
  • technical support (A/V, lighting)
  • vinyl signage
  • crating
  • wage for a gallery attendant
  • artist fees and curator fees according to CARFAC

The fund is not intended to cover costs that would ordinarily be borne by a publisher or production company. Nor does it support the collection, compilation, analysis or writing of material, which is considered basic research assistance and thus should be funded from another source. The Fund does not support page charges for journals or open access publication charges.

A maximum award of $1,500 will be made to successful applicants.

Applicants are expected to explore fully other sources of support, both inside and outside the university, and to explain why the funds are unavailable elsewhere. The fund gives preference to individual books and edited collections that have been accepted for publication.

  1. Associates are encouraged to seek funds from other sources
  2. Faculty and Graduate Associates are encouraged to consult the Director prior to applying.
  3. Graduate Associate should ideally be working in collaboration with other Graduate Associates or a faculty member.
  4. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received funding in the past two academic years.

The deadline to apply is May 1 and December 1. Requests outside of these deadlines should be directed to the YCAR Director and Coordinator. The YCAR Executive Committee adjudicates this opportunity.

Applications will be accepted throughout the year via this link.
