South Asia Research Cluster

The South Asia Research Cluster, housed in the York Centre for Asian Research, is an interdisciplinary collective of York faculty members, graduate students, academic visitors, artists, and community members who share their research focus on Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and their diasporas.

We provide a forum for hosting lecture series, workshops, and films and encourage conversations among faculty members, students and visiting scholars. We support several faculty research projects, film series and grant applications. Please visit our website for further details.

In Fall 2022, we launched a lecture series titled, Demos, Democracy, Democratization, beginning with a conversation featuring Siddharth Varadarajan, a prominent Indian journalist, discussing the state of democracy and media in India. This series fosters dialogue on democratic movements, governance, and civil liberties in South Asia. We will continue hosting more events in this series throughout the 2024–25 academic year

The South Asia Research Cluster is collaborating with Film South Asia to present eight outstanding film documentaries that focus on the challenges of climate change in the region. Film South Asia is a biennial festival that showcases documentaries on South Asia. As part of this collaboration, the South Asian Creative Project will feature climate-centered documentaries in their 2024 Doc Fest.
