Caputo Lab News

We say goodbye and a big thank you to Dr. Josh Gaffen and Lily Hoang as they leave the group. Wishing them all the best in their future endeavours! With departures, we also welcome several new faces to the team, Casey Lenart, Dr. Avik Bhattacharjee, Na-Yung Seoh, and Samantha Henneberry.

Also, congrats to Paul, Josh, and Thomas on our recent publication in the special issue of Canadian Journal of Chemistry honouring Dr. Suning Wang.

First off, many congrats to Nico for being awarded an NSERC PDF award, Lucas for receiving an NSERC PGS-D, and Taylor for winning the Michael Pollard Award. Congrats to Lily for successfully defending her CHEM4000 thesis, and we want to thank Angela for volunteering as a YSSA student over the last year, best of luck with everything! 

Keep an eye out for presentations from our lab this summer, Charley and Taylor will be presenting their work at the CCCE in Calgary this year. Chris participated in Science Meets Parliament as a delegate this spring, meeting with MPs and other Government Officials on Parliament Hill to discuss the importance of science.

Fall 2021 – It has been a hectic summer as lab operations begin to return to normal. First, a big congratulations to Amy for successfully defending her M.Sc. Thesis over the summer! We welcomed a number of new members to the team over the last few months. Three postdoctoral fellows have joined the team, Dr. Nico Bonanno from Brock University, Dr. Amandeep Brar from Texas Tech University, and Dr. Josh Gaffen has joined as a joint postdoctoral fellow between Chris and Dr. Thomas Baumgartner. Furthermore, Taylor Cosby joins us from Western University as a M.Sc. student, and Lily Hoang has started her CHEM4000 Thesis this fall.

Lucas’ paper on allenic phosphonium borate zwitterions was recently published in Chemical Communications. Chris co-wrote a book chapter with Dr. Meera Mehta from the University of Manchester on state-of-the-art Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry for Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry. Finally, our first collaborative paper with the VandenBoer lab was published in Analyst.

Spring 2021 – A lot of news to report on over the last few months! Our first graduate student has successfully defended, congrats to Fiona Jeeva for completing your M.Sc. degree! Best of luck with everything in the future.

On the publication front, Jordan and Selvyn had their work on Lewis acidic aminoboranes published in Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry.

We’d like to welcome Clive Boateng Ameyaw (CHEM4000), Isaac Timoffee-Maberley, and Nyu Nguyen to the team for the summer.

We have an industrial postdoctoral fellow position available in synthetic organic and dye chemistry! (This position has been filled).

Fall 2020 – A surprising amount of news has happened while the lab was closed due to the pandemic. Congrats to Ian and Fiona for their work on the development of colorimetric sensors for food spoilage (read it here!). Also congrats to Jordan, Seja, Josh and Paul for the FLA follow-up just published in Organometallics.

We also say goodbye to Dr. Andryj Borys-Smith who is now a Researcher at the University of Bern in Switzerland as well as Selvyn Simoes who is pursuing a PhD at Ryerson University. We also said hello and goodbye to Dr. Kevin Szkop who had a very productive 4-month postdoctoral visit and is now an Analyst at Shift Health. Finally, welcome to Charley Garrard (MSc Student), welcome back Seja Elgadi (co-op Student) and Hamna Zafar (CHEM4000)

Fall 2019 – A lot has been going on in the lab recently! We welcome Dr. Andryj Borys-Smith to the lab who will undertake postdoctoral studies in the group in collaboration with Prof. Baumgartner.

There are also three new graduate students, we welcome back Lucas Torres, also Selvyn Simoes and Amy Laturski join the team!

Finally, we welcome two CHEM4000 Thesis students, Charley Garrard and Dylan James. We also say goodbye to Zihao Li, who was a visiting student from Hunan China through the Mitacs Globallink program.
