Modes of Course Delivery

A mode of delivery refers to how and where teaching, learning, and assessment activities take place, including in-person, blended, and online approaches. This website is designed to support academic units, curriculum committees, and instructors in making informed decisions about course delivery by providing guidance, considerations, and decision-making tools that prioritize learning outcomes, student success, accessibility, and program goals.

Recognizing that course delivery decisions have implications for students' experience beyond individual courses, academic units are encouraged to consider modes of delivery within the broader context of program learning outcomes and the overall student journey. Decisions about the mix and distribution of delivery modes across courses should therefore be considered at the program level, as well as for individual courses.

The guidelines and decision-making criteria for modes of course delivery align with:

  • Intended learning outcomes and pedagogical goals
  • Student learning, accessibility, and engagement needs
  • Instructor expertise and teaching context
  • Program and disciplinary requirements
  • Available technologies, learning spaces, and institutional resources
  • York University's academic priorities and principles
