Special Issue: Academic Support

Here’s your timely & targeted compilation of key events, noteworthy news and important dates for the remainder of the week. This special edition is focused on online and remote academic support.

Note: any information related to changes due to COVID-19 found in this newsletter has already been communicated to the community and can be found at York’s YU Better Together website. All this information is accurate at the newsletter’s time of publication.

Here are some other important items to keep in mind this week.

1 Statement regarding private tutoring companies that claim an affiliation with York University: It has come to our attention that certain private tutoring companies are making claims that they are affiliated with York University. York has no affiliation with any of these companies, who are illegally claiming to be connected to or endorsed by York. Read the complete statement.
2 Academic Advising. Your Faculty Academic Advisors are available remotely to help you make informed and thoughtful decisions about your academic pathway as you progress through your program.
3 Peer Academic Coaching. If you are looking for individual support to help you achieve your academic goals, meet with one of the Learning Skills Services Peers for a 30-minute remote one-to-one session to discuss strategies to support your academic success, from how to develop and stick to a realistic time management plan to how to tackle your readings, assignments and exams. Sessions are by appointment only, Tuesdays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
4 Learning Skills Services. In addition to Peer Academic Coaching, Learning Skills Services (LSS) offers workshops online and downloadable materials to help students all levels of study from first year through graduate studies take charge of their own learning, build academic skills and foster deeper engagement with their studies.

Workshop: Reading & Notetaking. Register for this workshop to learn more effective reading and note taking techniques to help you stay on top of your course work. July 20, 2020 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

5 Virtual York Library Services. York's library services are continuing online even though in-person services aren’t available. If you need to connect with a librarian, you can do so through online chat, or use the Ask/Clavardez service for research help from library staff at Ontario universities, including York.
6 Online Activities Calendar. Have you seen the new Summer Online Activities Calendar? You can filter your calendar view by type of activity, including academic activities. Next week’s academic activity calendar includes the Reading and Notetaking workshop mentioned in #4. Visit the calendar to see other July and August activities to help support your academic success.
7 TheStrive Studies. Are you used to having a study partner and wish you still could? Well you can…virtually! Tune in to this YouTube channel and choose your favourite study option. You can even get regular reminders to take a break.
8 Mental Health & Wellness. Don’t forget that taking care of your physical and mental wellbeing contributes to your academic success. Student Counselling & Development is available remotely for emergency and short-term individual counselling, group counselling and workshops. A variety of online and remote services and tools are accessible from the Mental Health & Wellness at York website; and you can reach The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education at 416-736-5211.
